For many years during the 1990s and early 2000s, Crystal Palace were perceived as one of the original yo-yo clubs between the Premier League and Division One. The six years between 1998 and 2004 is the longest period the club has been out of the top flight since the formation of the Premier League, although the 2009/10 season will be the fifth since their last appearance with the big clubs.

Any hopes of trying to return to the top flight in 2010/1 were quickly dampened and Palace only avoided the drop to League One by six points. But the club has a strong history but no major honours as Manchester United dented hopes of a famous FA Cup victory in 1990 after a replay in the final, while a handful of League Cup pursuits have been aborted at the latter stages.
