Remember when Oldham Athletic were in the Premier League? Some of our readers might be too young to remember this, but the Latics survived relegation from the inaugural competition on goal difference as Crystal Palace failed to gain the win they required to stay up. The margin was two goals.
The Latics so nearly wrecked Manchester United's first double in 1994. With just a minute remaining of the semi final underneath the Twin Towers of Wembley, Joe Royle's Oldham were leading. Mark Hughes levelled the game, United romped the Maine Road replay 4-1 and the rest is history. And Oldham's best FA Cup showing was not bettered. It was not the first time that Oldham Athletic had been in the top flight, following promotion in 1991. The Latics had occupied a spot at the top table of English football between 1910 and 1923, finishing runners-up in 1915. Obviously, a global conflict prevented any play between 1915-1919. The return to the top flight in 1991 lasted three seasons - each spent inside the bottom five (then four, then two). It prompted a slide in fortunes for the Lancashire club, with just three seasons spent in Division One before another drop. There, however, it appeared to level out for them. At least, there were no more relegations. Select an option from the left for more information about this club |
