Notts County are regarded as the oldest Football League club currently in existence, with the club's origins dating back to 1862. During that long history, there have been several fleeting appearances in the top flight - the last being a one-season stopover before relegation on the eve of the Premier League's inception. Talk about timing.

The Magpies was subject to one of the more surreal stories in recent years, when Sven Goran Eriksson took over as director of football following the news that Munto Finance had acquired the club. It was thought that Notts County were now in receipt of significant resources, only for the bubble to burst within a matter of months.

Promotion beckoned with some big-name players in 2009, but the appointment of Paul Ince as manager for the League One campaign was one that lasted just a few months as the club slid towards the relegation fray. Martin Allen came in towards the end of the 2010/1 season and secured the club's League One status.

Notts County holds some notoriety - reportedly - for being the club that has moved between the divisions of the Football League on more occasions than any other, with a total of thirteen promotions and fifteen relegations. We'd verify that, but there's a lot of clubs to go through.
