The current incarnation of Newport County were formed in 1989 to replace a former club of the same name that succumbed to financial difficulties, following the end of its 68-year stay in the Football League. The old Newport County had been a founder member of the Football League's Division Three North in 1912 and reached the dizzy heights of Division Two in the immediate postwar years.
After a European adventure during the early 1980s, County went out of business in February 1989 and resigned from the Conference. The newly-reformed Newport AFC started life in the Hellenic League and has spent the last two decades trying to pick up where the old club left off. The Exiles quickly made progress up the pyramid and completed their return to the top tier of non-league football in 2010 after gaining promotion to the Blue Square Premier under the guidance of Dean Holdsworth. Now back to the level it left off in 1989, the next ambition is to regain Football League status. Select an option from the left for more information about this club |
