HISTORY

Arguably one of the biggest clubs in English football, it was quite amusing to see Newcastle United relegated from the Premier League in 2009 after a 16-year spell. It was a period in which the Geordies came a close second to Manchester United in the title race during the 1990s, although the wait for a trophy goes on.

With nothing to show for their efforts for half a century, the managerial and boardroom uncertainty has faced the club in recent years. Promotion from the Coca-Cola Championship was gained at the first attempt and was quite comfortable in its return to the top flight.

There will be little sympathy in Stevenage when the club went down, however, because those who remember will consider it karma for the rather dubious way in which Newcastle United advanced past Boro' in the 1997/8 FA Cup fourth round replay. Crossed the line? Yeah, right. Mind you, that particular demon has now been exorcised...
