It took a few more attempts than Morecambe would have liked, but the club finally secured its long-awaited promotion to the Football League in 2007 through the playoffs. Sammy McIlroy was the man who eventually got them there after assuming the manager's position from Jim Harvey and since then, the Shrimpers have established themselve in League Two with two successive 11th position finishes.

Given the club's strong showing in the Conference, it seemed inevitable that the Football League was a case of sooner rather than later. The 2009/10 campaign brought about playoff heartbreak in the club's bid to push on other level; comprehensively beaten by eventual promotees Dagenham and Redbridge. But the 2010/1 season was a new dawn for Morecambe - the Shrimps have packed up and left Christie Park for The Globe Arena.

It is always nice to renew acquaintances with a club where Boro' have enjoyed some memorable battles over the years. Who can forget John Hamsher's penalty? The FA Trophy fixture played in the fog? Steve Morison's hattrick in a 3-3 draw under Mark Stimson? Much can be said for trips to Morecambe - although the successive promotion to League One in 2011 means that Boro' were only afforded a fleeting reunion.
