Merthyr Tydfil felt the tide turn against them during the first decade of the 21st century, as financial difficulties mounted up. Owner Wyn Holloway announced that he had no more investment to offer the club and with utilities companies cutting off the ground's supply, the Martyrs found themselves facing the prospect of being unable to fulfil 2008/9 Southern League Premier Division commitments.

A desperate fundraising campaign secured the necessary finances to enable the club to see that campaign out but the problems continued into 2009/10. A winding up petition followed the close of the 2008/9 season over unpaid tax debts, and plans had been mooted of an MK Dons-style relocation. However, the end of the 2009/10 campaign brought about the end of the club in its current guise - immediately reformed for a new future.

It is undoubtedly be a shame that senior football in Merthyr Tydfil met with difficulties in the light of the demise of Merthyr Town during the 1920s, having previously competed in the Football League. The Valleys' sole representative in the English league has had a good run, and hopefully the new club can extend that.
