The end of a 77-year stay in the Football League that came to an end in 2008 would be a bitter bill to swallow for Mansfield Town fans. Just four seasons beforehand, they were a game away from moving up into League One - the third tier of the League in which they'd spent a fair amount of their history.

But with off-field uncertainties, that long stay in the League came to an end and Mansfield slipped out into non-league ranks a few games before the season came to a close. In reality, the side were just two points away from propping up the Football League alongside Wrexham.

The club announced a takeover deal in summer 2008 with the intention of safeguarding the club's future. However, it led to problems later down the line as a conflict arose between the owner of Field Mill and the new people in charge at the Stags that nearly led to the club being left homeless.

After a stronger 2009/10 campaign, to have only finished 13th in 2010/1 would be a disappointment for Mansfield Town. A Wembley appearance in the FA Trophy was also unsuccessful, but it'd be likely that while they remain in the Conference, they will be one of the stronger teams.
