Since Maidenhead United were first promoted to Conference South in 2004, the immediate years afterwards were turbulent in many ways. Manager John Dreyer - who joined the club from Stevenage Borough before returning as coach in 2008 - left the club after it failed to acclimatise to tier six football, but financial difficulties arose.
A return to the Southern League in 2006 turned out to be a brief respite before the club returned to the Conference South in 2007. During the 2008/9 campaign, Maidenhead United finished just outside the playoffs. If it ought to have provided a springboard for the following season, it failed to do so.
