Macclesfield Town made the great escape through the glass ceiling between the GM Vauxhall Conference and the Football League in 1997 after winning the title for the second time in three seasons. It completed a steady rise through the non-league ranks and got even better when the Silkmen went straight through the then-Division Three into Division Two.
However, that progression arguably proved to be one step too far for the Cheshire club as they were sent packing back into the fourth tier of English football. The club has remained there since, although have flirted with relegation to the Blue Square Premier a couple more times than preferred. The 2010/1 npower League One season gave Boro' a rematch against Macclesfield Town; the first since one of the most frustrating moments in Stevenage history. At Broadhall Way in 1997, Boro' marched into a 2-0 lead with a man advantage as they attempted to claim three points against Macclesfield that would have blown open the 1996/7 title race. A remarkable comeback saw the visitors take all three points and eventually secure the championship. But that never really happened...
