Who Are... Luton Town FC?
It has been a turbulent few years for the men from Bedfordshire, and a period that has seen the club slide from the Coca-Cola Championship right through Leagues One and Two and into the Blue Square Premier - their first foray outside the Football League since before Queen Victoria kicked the bucket in nineteen-hundred-and-one. In a parting shot to the Football League authorities who had robbed them of a combined 40 points over the course of two seasons, Luton Town went to Wembley and stole the Johnston's Paint Trophy. That said, they've been denied the chance to defend it.
The widely-documented financial strife that has accompanied one of English football's former giants in recent years cannot go unnoticed, but the 30 point deduction for various issues in 2008/9 effectively relegated the club before a ball was kicked. This was despite the best efforts of players and staff, and now it is those players charged with getting the Hatters back up into the Football League at the first time of asking. You could argue that they have the motivation to do it.
Either Luton Town will sweep aside the Blue Square Premier in 2008/9, or they will flounder as they fail to cope with the demands. However, it is surely the case that a team arguably two leagues below their true level will be the sternest of opponents over the course of the season, and it is little wonder that the bookies put them up top on the list of favourites. The Hatters could be very hard to stop once they get going, so it may be about denying them the chance to start well that ultimately determines how their season fares.
