A founder member of Football League Division Two in 1892, Lincoln City has been a component of the Football League almost ever since. A one-season stay in the Conference for the 1987/8 season blemished an otherwise faultless run of Football League appearances, although the club has never to date broke into the top flight, and has been consigned to the lower rungs of the League set-up for some years now and are very much stalwarts of the competition.

After appearing secure in the third tier of English football, any hopes of addressing the fact that its best league finish came the year after Queen Victoria died were quashed by relegation back to the Conference. A terrible run during the second half of the 2010/1 campaign saw the Imps plummet down the table and into the dreaded drop zone. There was a chance of survival on the final day, but it was relinquished with defeat against Aldershot.
