Lewes FC were founder members of the Sussex County League back in 1920, and it was a competition that they came close to winning on a number of occasions until 1965 when they finally struck it lucky. The following season they moved onto the Athenian League, and in 1977 moved on again to the Isthmian League. In 2004, the club won the Isthmian League Division One South which earned them a playoff for the newly-formed Conference South.

Defeating Yeading, Basingstoke and Kingstonian, they earned their place in the second tier of non-league football and went onto win the Blue Square South title in 2008. However, one season in the Blue Square Premier was all they could manage and a repeat adventure did not appear as if it would be sooner rather than later.
