Formed in 1908, it took just two years for Huddersfield Town to be elected to Football League Division Two and barely 20 years to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with. After the First World War, the Terriers were promoted to the top flight in the first season following the resumption of the competition and also made the final of the FA Cup. It was the start of a golden era for the club.
In 1922, Huddersfield Town recorded their first and only FA Cup triumph by beating Preston at Stamford Bridge. A further two years later, the Terriers were champions of England. And they were again the following season. And again the season after that – three years of dominance being the pinnacle of the club's existence and within two decades of being formed. It was nearly the case that Huddersfield Town were champions five times on the bounce, with two second place finishes following the run of three title wins. And the club were thrice FA Cup runners-up before the outbreak of war for a second time. However, relegation to Division Two beckoned in 1952 and - despite two separate returns to Division One - the top flight became but a memory over the coming decades. Recovering from a spell in the basement division in the mid-1970s, the club rose back to Division One in 1995 but could get no higher. The club returned to the basement division in 2003 but instantly return to League One nee Division Two for what was to be the longest unbroken stint in a division since a 14-year stay in Division Two between 1956 and 1970.
