Right, now bear with us because this history is a tad complicated if you're not paying attention. Essentially, the Hastings United we see before us today is not the Hastings United that provided Southern League opposition to both Stevenage Town and Stevenage Athletic in days gone by.
And the reason for why will now be explained... or at least attempted. United started life in 1894 as the curiously named Rock-a-Nore. After merging with All Saints in 1921 to become Hastings and St. Leonards Amateurs, the club appeared to have settled on a name that would see them through the years. At least, that was the case until 1979, when the newly rebranded Hastings Town was unveiled. Six years later, Town joined the Southern League following the demise of the former United side and went as far as to adopt the United moniker in 2002. Simple? No, we thought not...
