It could have been so different had events not turned out how they did in summer 2010. Gillingham FC were hardly flavour of the season at Broadhall Way over the apparent circumstances that saw Mark Stimson depart for the managerial position at Priestfield.

The subsequent recruitment of a number of well-regarded Boro' performers didn't exactly mellow the mood between the two clubs. However, times have indeed changed and Stimson decided to stoke an existing rivalry at Barnet.

Gillingham have certainly seen a lot of action recently. Who could forget their incredible defeat to Manchester City in the Division Two playoff final at Wembley in 1999; two-nil up with two minutes left on the clock, and yet still the Manchester club came out on top following an eventual penalty shoot-out.

But the club did make it to Division One for a brief stint - the 2004/5 season, before relegation to League One in 2005 and League Two in 2008. An immediate return was spoiled by an immediate relegation; up in 2009 and down in 2010, after a last day defeat and other results conspired against the Kent club.
