To say Gateshead have been a bogey team of Stevenage in years past would be a tad overstating things. However, the Heed were resolute against Boro' in the Hertfordshire club's Conference-winning campaign of 1995/6 with two draws. And they were almost peerless in managing to score three times against Boro' in 2010/1.

The turbulent history of football in Gateshead took a turn for the positive at a time when the region's largest football club sought to halt a decline in its fortunes - Newcastle United. There is little seperating both Gateshead and Stevenage in terms of age and a desire to safeguard the long-term security of football for their respective localities.

Since their previous stint in the top flight of non-league football, Gateshead have experienced two demotions and have been forced to work hard to reclaim a spot at the top. However, remarkable tenacity - with a points deduction failing to halt their rise into the Northern Premier League in 2004 - has seen them back to the Conference.
