Always a formidable opponent during their stay in the Conference, Exeter City have gone from strength to strength since returning to the Football League. It appears the handful of years of consolidation stood the Grecians in good stead as they progressed through League Two and into League One.

Off-the-field cash woes now appear to be a long way behind the club, and Exeter City became Devon's leading club in 2011 after Plymouth Argyle were relegated and joined Torquay United in League Two. The Grecians will certainly be looking to keep that arrangement going for more than one season.

As Stevenage gained promotion to League One in 2010/1, it would ensure a reunification with a club that very much had the measure of the Hertfordshire club at St James' Park when the sides last met. Under Peter Taylor, Boro' lost 4-0 in the league down in Devon. And 4-0 in the FA Cup. Ouch!

That said, Boro' have had their moments in Devon in the past and League One presented Graham Westley's side the opportunity to see whether they could still do a job on Exeter City in their own backyard. The trouble is, not many clubs at that level find it easy to do.
