A relatively young club by most standards, Dover Athletic was founded in 1983 after the town's previous football club - Dover FC - went under. At the peak of their powers, the club spent nine seasons in the Conference and recorded a best finish of sixth, while providing a stubborn opponent to Stevenage Borough, particularly at home.

In some respects, it could be considered that Dover was a bogey team for Boro'. During the Hertfordshire club's first season in the GM Vauxhall Conference, the Kent side scored five without reply across two games, and even during the season when Dover were relegated in 2002, Boro' rolled over 3-1 at Broadhall Way.

Now the Kent side are fighting back after receiving a bit of investment and have ended their exile in the Isthmian League. A return to the Blue Square South was the first step; kicking on for a return to the Blue Square Premier is the next one.
