Darlington Football Club ran into financial difficulties in recent years, with administrators called in during the 2008/9 season, but the Quakers have a long history stretching back to the late 19th century. After helping to establish the Northern League in 1899, the club moved via the North Eastern League to help set up Football League Division Three North in 1921.

The club had more or less been confined to the bottom of the Football League ladder, except for a brief spell in the second tier during the mid-1920s, as well as a brief incursion to the Conference in 1989/90. Ambition has never been too far away from the club however, with chair George Reynolds attempting a major coup a few seasons ago with an approach for former Newcastle United and Colombia striker, Faustino Asprilla.

The move didn't come off, but the Quakers did relocate to a plush new stadium before hitting the financial buffers. During summer 2009, a new owner was sought in order to secure the club's long-term future. A return to the non-league ranks in 2010 didn't help isues, but a FA Trophy win in 2011 had the opportunity to spur the Quakers on towards a Football League return.
