The Daggers were a member of the Conference to provide a welcoming committee for Stevenage Borough in 1994, and Stevenage Borough reciprocated that in 2000. However, the Essex side decided it wasn't enough and decided to move on up to the Football League in 2007 after a couple of close shaves.
Towards the latter stages of their stay in the Conference, the Daggers usually had the upper hand over Boro' as they increased the stranglehold on their bid to wrap up the title. Now in the Football League, the Daggers settled in and pushed on in 2008/9 with a near miss with the playoffs. It proved to be the catalyst for success, however, as the club gained promotion to League One through the playoffs; beating Rotherham United in a final that saw the club see off Rotherham by the odd goal in five. It was a one-season stay in League One, however, with a 21st place finish signalling the drop. Dagenham and Redbridge will give Stevenage an idea of what to expect; both clubs are fairly similar in their set-up and Boro' would be keen heading into the 2011/2 season not to repeat the moments that undermined the Daggers' bid to stay in the third tier.
