Allegedly named after Princess Alexandra, Crewe Alexandra have been with us since 1877 and were founder members of the Second Division in 1892. However, the initial Football League adventure was to last just four seasons before the club lost its battle for re-election. The absence, obviously, was not a permanent arrangement and the Railwaymen returned to the fold in 1921 as founder members of Division Three North.

A long-time member of the Football League's basement divisions, Crewe Alexandra have recently been at the second-top table with two seasons in the Coca Cola Championship before relegation in 2006. Now they find themselves back at a level they've spent most of their Football League experience and comfortable in it they seem; indeed, the 2009/10 showing of 18th was a poor one if truth be told.
