Formed in 1937 in the wake of Colchester Town's demise, Colchester United went straight into the Southern League and were champions in only their second season. This was the last action they would see before World War Two, and just four years after the resumption of the competition, the club was admitted into the Football League.
The following seasons were spent alternating between Divisions Three and Four; fifth spot appearing to be the height of The U's capabilities through the 1950s, 1960s, 1970s and 1980s. However, that run and the club's residence in the Football League was brought to a shuddering halt in 1990 when relegation to the Conference saw Colchester United rejoin non-league ranks. It took two seasons to regain their place in the League, with an FA Trophy triumph along the way. The U's embarked on a gradual rise through the divisions and entered the second tier for the first time in 2006. There was even a brief challenge for promotion to the top flight, but their debut season finished with a 10th place finish. They returned to the third tier in 2008.
