More, more, more – how do you like it? Us and Morecambe historically have a habit of being in the same place at the same time. After the apocalypse, all that’ll be left will be the insects – and two league fixtures between us and the Shrimps scheduled each year. Even though the 2019-20 campaign was cut short, the Shrimps leapt over Woking to become the side we’ve played most. But we need to put that stat on a bit of ice for the current time.

It was some feat for us to clock up so many meetings with them. The Lancashire side were often seen flirting with an almost inevitable relegation from League Two. Then, we then only survived due to matters involving other clubs. That changed in 2021 when the Shrimps went up to League One for the first time in their history. They just about clung on; surviving by two points. But the fact is they were up there and we weren’t. The half century would have to wait.

Since our first meeting in April 1996, we’ve walked hand-in-hand every step of the way since. At least it feels that way; taking a three-year gap between our promotions to the Football League and our time in League One out of the equation.

Morecambe: Us and Them

It’s nearly 100 years since Morecambe Football Club came into existence and their journey can almost fit into neat compartments of ever decreasing circles. It can be seen in these terms-ish: 50% Lancashire Combination, with four titles between 1920 and 1967; 25% Northern Premier League, with a best finish of second earning promotion to the Conference; and almost 20% Conference. That leaves 5% and their more recent past, which has been spent in the League thanks to their 2007 playoff win. How do you like our artistic licence?

Morecambe have top billing in one part of the Boro’ record books already. Our 60 goals (So far! Ed.) puts them waaay out in front of our sharp shooting list. We’ve bagged more goals versus the Shrimps than any other side. And yet it wasn’t always like that. Our first meetings almost paint a different picture during the 1995-6 GM Vauxhall Conference season. Weirdly, both matches were bundled in towards the end of term. Double weirdly, they were one of a select few sides not to lose to Boro’ that term – taking four points from those two games.

How to get to Morecambe – Travel Information – Distance: 229 miles

By Road

There are numerous ways to get to Morecambe – including the more scenic (but longer) route across the Yorkshire Dales. To get there quicker, however, take the M1 to Junction 24 for the A50. Take the A50 across the M1/M6 corridor until you reach Stoke. At Stoke, head northbound on the A500 ring road to get to Junction 16 of the M6.

Join the northbound M6 and continue up to Junction 34 (A683 Lancaster). Exit onto the A683 and head into Lancaster. Follow signs for Morecambe and the A589. When you reach the Shrimp Roundabout, turn left onto Westgate and the ground is about one mile down on the right hand side – just before the second bridge.

Parking

The Shrimps don’t offer car parking themselves on a matchday. The nearest option is the Westgate Primary School (LA4 4XF), which is controlled by the school and costs £4 for a car. It opens two hours before kick-off and closes one hour after full time. Just be aware that it’s capacity is 260 cars; while it’s unlikely to be a packed attendance, it could be the last thing you need after a long drive if it’s full.

Limited on-street parking is available in the local area. Continue along Westgate with the stadium on the right until you get on the other side of the railway.

By Rail

Station: MORECAMBE
Services to: LANCASTER (for LONDON EUSTON)

The walk from Morecambe railway station is just over a mile. Give yourself time to make the distance in time. From the station, go east on the B5321 Station Road and turn right onto the B5274 for the shortest of treks. Turn right at the B5274 West End Road for 0.2 miles; then making a left at Acre Moss Lane. Nearly half a mile later, continue onto Buckingham Road and then turn left into Westgate. The ground will be on the left.
