One of the oldest football clubs in the country, Chesterfield were formed in 1866 and joined the Football League in 1899. The Spireites only had ten years in the competition before they were booted out in 1909 and were forced to compete in the Midland League before helping to found Division Three North in 1921.

It was this event that began an unbroken association with the League that has endured through to the current day. A smattering of championships fails to betray the fact that Chesterfield have spent most of their time in the League in the lower half of the pyramid.

One of the club's most recent and iconic moments was the epic FA Cup campaign in 1996/7, when the Spireites were robbed in the semi-finals by Middlesbrough thanks to a hotly disputed goal awarded by the officials to maintain Boro's campaign; Chesterfield eventually lost out after a replay.

Now the club has waved goodbye to Saltergate after more than 125 years at the venue, the advent of the b2net Stadium has heralded a bright new era for the Derbyshire club. In 2010/1, the club were dominant champions of League Two and secured a return to League One; the new ground surely having an impact.
