The relegation of Chester City from the Football League at the end of the 2008/9 season was both surprising and unsurprising in equal measure. Off-the-field turmoil at boardroom level reached its resolution shortly before the 2009 AGM to ensure Chester City could compete in the Blue Square Premier, but ultimately had an impact on the club's League status.

Their second relegation from the Football League, the club dropped in a season when three clubs below them had points deductions forced upon them that had given Chester City ample breathing space at the start of the season. The first time Chester City went down, they surrendered nearly 70 years of League history for a four-year spell in the Conference.

Regrouping under new manager Mick Wadsworth and new owners, the club looked to get back on the front foot as quickly as possible. Certainly the need was to draw on their previous experiences at this level in order to battle it out with the top teams in the division - a division that had bulked up since City's last appearance.

Much was also be made of the players signed in the close season, but ongoing financial difficulties and points deductions culminated in the team's expulsion from the competition in February 2010 and the expunging of records. In March 2010, the club was wound up by the High Court.
