Cheltenham Town were not in the mood to muck about when they returned to the Nationwide Conference in 1997, following a period of exile in the Southern League Premier Division during the mid-1990s. The spell outside the top flight of the non-league pyramid checked years of progress and consolidation, but on their return the club recorded a second place finish before going one better the following season.

More recently, the Robins have enjoyed a spell in League One, but three seasons proved more than enough as the Gloucestershire outfit returned to League Two in 2009. By far the most dominant club in their region, Cheltenham Town have had very little to concern themselves with from Gloucester City and Forest Green Rovers.

Stevenage and the Robins shared an experience that can be described as one of the more surreal incidents of each club's respective histories in the late 1990s. A bomb scare of all things forced the evacuation of the Robins' ground, with fans all descending on a nearby amateur pitch to take in some 'pure' football in the absence.
