Having originally formed as Mill Lane Mission, the club became known as Carshalton Athletic in 1907 and registered their first senior success during the postwar years in the Corinthian League. In 1956, the club joined the Athenian League and moved onto the Isthmian League in 1973.

Despite peaking at Conference South level, the club found itself back in the Isthmian League Premier Division in 2006; a competition they first entered in 1977. On a further note of trivia, Carshalton Athletic was one of the first ports of call for Stevenage on the Hertfordshire club's epic FA Cup run of 1997/8.
