Carlisle United wasted no time in returning to the Football League after one season spent at Nationwide Conference level. In getting back to the League, Carlisle United pushed on further. Having spent a few years surviving at the bottom of League Two, the return preceded promotion to the third tier in 2006 after storming to the title. After the club managed to ward off relegation in 2009, League One became a more accommodating environment. A trophy was added to the Carlisle United cabinet in 2011 with the successful Johnstone's Paint Trophy campaign. It was perhaps an indication of how far the club had come since a goalkeeper named Jimmy Glass scored an injury time goal to save the club from relegation to the Conference at the expense of Scarborough in 1999.
