Canvey Island took their time but finally secured promotion to the Conference in 2004 after a good few seasons trying to do so. Having been a dominant force in the Ryman Premier League for the last few seasons, winning an FA Trophy title in the process when they defeated Forest Green in 2001, the Islanders made their step up.

The team from Essex have made themselves known as a giant killer in past cup tournaments, and narrowly lost to Southend United in the FA Cup in 2003/4. Despite finding the Conference more challenging, it didn't stop Canvey Island having a go and sent some of the old guard home with their tails between their legs.

However, financial difficulties meant that the club voluntarily accepted demotion to the Isthmian League following the conclusion of the club's second season in the Conference; a season where they had built on their debut and finished a comfortable 14th. The battle is now on for a return sooner rather than later.
