A team with a long and fruitful history, Bury FC were formed in 1885 as the result of a meeting between the Bury Wesleyans and Bury Unitarians Football Clubs. Within ten years of their existence, the Shakers were voted into the Football League and laid foundations for an association with the competition that has endured to the present day.
However, it has been an association that has seen most of the time spent in the lower echelons of the League setup, having last seen top flight action in 1929. The Shakers boast two FA Cup wins at the turn of the 20th century but have relatively few honours to show for their exploits over the years. In recent times, the club has been rooted to League Two after relegation from the then-Division Two at the turn of the 21st century. A 9th place finish in 2009/10 underlines the fact that the Shakers are solid performers at their current level and are capable of posing a problem for most teams in the league. As Stevenage find their feet in their inaugural Football League campaign, it is old hands like Bury that provided a benchmark for the progress made by Boro' in recent years at non-league level. In a competition surrounded by old non-league friends, there were still a few Football League veterans that were eager not to see another non-league graduate upstage them; Bury was one of those. An imposing 3-0 home win and a pulsating 3-3 draw ensured Bury did not get shown up by Boro'. Automatic promotion to League One followed for the Shakers. As it did for Boro'.
