Altrincham FC formed as Broadheath FC in 1893 before changing to
their current name in 1903. Originally competing in the Lancashire Combination League from
1911, after the First World War the club helped form the Cheshire League, in which they
competed until 1968. Again they were founder members of a league at that point, helping to
form the new Northern Premier League, finishing second in 1979. It was that year that they
went onto be one of the founder members of the Alliance Premier League back, winning the
first two incarnations of the competition, before remaining at the top end of non-league
football until relegation in 1997 ended an impressive stretch of 18 years.
A return to the Conference was shortlived in 1999, with relegation again in the same
season putting the club on a heavier decline; the Cheshire side found themselves in the
Unibond League just a year later.
The return, however, was swift. After scraping into the newly-formed Conference North in
2004, the club qualified for the playoffs and made it through by virtue of the only ever
North v South playoff in 2005. Now they have survived at the top level of non-league
football for three years by virtue of other clubs running into difficulties, but the
achievements of doing so as a part-time club are not to be sniffed at.
