Aldershot Town is one of those clubs formed out of the ashes of a former organisation that suffered the misfortune of going under. In 1992, the club was formed by enthusiasts bidding to bring League football back to the Recreation Ground after financial issues forced it to surrender its place in Division Four on the eve of the greatest shake-up in Football League history.
The return to the Football League was rapid, with a quick ascent through the Isthmian League pyramid culminating in promotion to the Conference in 2003 after a brief plateau in fortunes. Five seasons later, the club wrapped up the Blue Square Premier title in 2008 and made it into the Football League - a mere 16 years after the predecessor exited. Since then, the Shots have firmly established themselves in the League as they look to avoid the mistakes that led to the demise of the former team. Indeed, the 2009/10 season brought them close to promotion up into League One after making the playoffs, but the Shots were to be denied by Rotherham United over the two-legged semi-final.
