BOROGUIDE FC

BoroGuide FC 5-1 Farnborough Town

Date: Saturday 29th January 2005
Competition: Friendly (11-a-side)

Written by: Tiny

On a cold wet and rather windy January morning, the two rival sides, namely Boroguide FC and Farnborough town took battle. The pitch was in a rather poor state with ankle deep mud making for much entertainment. Farnborough kicked off, kicking from right to left as we looked down the slope towards Broadhall way itself.

As the wind blew and the fans moaned it didn’t take long for the deadlock to be broken. With great link up play from one of Boro’s stars (yes he beat the Woking) Rolo and Thora surged forward quickly making their presence felt in the Farnborough penalty area! It took only 4 seconds for a scrappy goal to be back healed over the line from an ever present and somewhat happy Craig. So with less than a minute on the clock in less than good conditions Boroguide FC were 1 up.

The game was quickly restarted by a somewhat shell shocked Farnborough but they never managed to grasp control of the game. With Boro once again gaining possession and control, with what little Farnborough could offer coming from a hurried cross well claimed by the Boro keeper. Further disappointed was sewn into the Farnborough lads when on 7 minutes Andy C collected the ball out wide to feed Miss Europa who obligingly lobbed neatly over the keeper to further cement Boro’s command on the game.

The match soon settled and it was obvious that Stevenage had a two-goal cushion and the confidence in the team was showing. Keeping possession and often on the attack Farnborough wonder if there was a way back in for them. After Just 20 minutes Farnborough began to find their feet and play the football we all know they’re capable of. Firstly Boro stopped a promising attack with a hard-hitting tackle by Ben in the middle of the park. However the resulting free kick lead to a good period of play forcing a good save from an otherwise untroubled Nonats. With Boroguide still in control Thora fired a shot goal wards but only to see his effort well saved. Some relief came on 23 minutes for a struggling Farnborough when ‘the lion’ professionally controlled a cultured long ball over the top to finish into the top corner of Nonats goal. You could have been mistaken for thinking the half ended at this point, with little more action in the half. Boro finished as they started, bossing the play from the middle of the park, through an ever-present Mark E. The only cause for concern being a clash of heads to Boro’s striker Thora who went down heavily just before half time. Luckily after some encouraging words from his captain he rose for the half time whistle.

After a brief breather the teams took to the pitch once more and Boro started where they had left off, with Craig attacking through the midfield, but only to see the ball scrambled away. However it didn’t take long to see the ball in the back of the net once more. With Sooty winning possession out on the left feeding a forward running Statto who looked up and whipped the ball nicely in to the delight of a rising Rosco who headed home, 3-1 Boro.

With Farnborough somewhat annoyed at loosing another goal so quickly after half time it was them on the offensive straight after the restart. A good chance coming on 54 minutes when a Farney free kick was palmed away straight to Mike Hunt who’s shot just flew past the near side post. With danger bells ringing in the Boro player’s heads seeing that the game was not yet signed and sealed Thora burst into action. With the midfield bossing play, Mark E picked up possession on the right flank, after a few classy skills and a nice run, his low cross left Thora with an easy finish to make the game the safe.

With Boro well in control the game progressed with attacks being cut out and both teams seeming a little warn. Ben was battling hard in the middle of the park and his service play wasn’t going unnoticed by his forwards who had a few more half chances. Many may think that the lead should have been increased just after the hour mark when Miss Europa went down in the box, shouts and cries for a penalty went unheard though by referee Two Hats who I thought had a very good game and made the correct decision.

As it increasingly started to look like Boro would add to their already comfortable lead, Farnborough managed to get themselves back into the football game and some good attacking play was seen at times. A few corners were conceded, one seemed certain to be crossing the line but Craig once again was in the right place at the right time and cleared off the line to advert any danger.

Once again the Stevenage boys replied with an attacking burst with Mark E’s headed from a Rolo corner being saved well by the Farnborough number one. With this save he threw in the gloves for a period out on pitch and it was left to Jerskine to fill the vacant role. He was quickly forced into action saving shots from a tiring Thora and Miss Europa (the dreaded Boro attacking duo!)

With the final whistle approaching, Stevenage forced a corner with Mick racing across to take it. A good delivery flying towards the back stick met a diving lighthouse to head home once again creating a final score of 5-1. Lighthouse however did receive a yellow card for a somewhat over zealous goal celebration in which he felt it necessary to remove his shirt and roll in the mud, (not really needed on a Saturday morning.)

With everyone looking at their watches (well I was) and dreaming of the warmth of the Broadhall suite all eyes were on the referee. Well apart from Farnborough’s who seemed to want to grab a conciliation goal. Finishing with some good aggressive play a corner was forced. Bob Makin Obviously felt their hadn’t been enough entertainment for one day and with a powerful headed that any forward would have been proud off drove the ball onto his own crossbar. With this the whistle went and the rush for the showers (and the beer) was on!

A very entertaining 90 minutes of football with both sides producing some exciting attacking play. However with Boro’s quick first two goals, Farnborough always had a huge mountain to clime but the game never ceased to be exciting and competitive. I’m sure we will see these two teams take battle once again with the men from Hampshire looking for revenge.
