Fairytale Of Newport?

Stevenage v Newport County: Fairytale Of Newport?

“How did York do? Did Dagenham win?” – just two or three more games and we might be able to stop asking those two questions after Boro’s latest attempt to keep the League Two relegation battle alive. It could be sooner if we’re lucky. It could be the full five remaining fixtures, well, if we’re not. The end of the season is nigh and there are just a few more formalities to take care of before we can all swan off to Magaluf for two weeks half-board.

Stevenage v Newport County: International Ties

The first of our not-so-famous five is Newport County indoors. The Welsh side have lost their last five outings and that’s the main reason we can still leapfrog them if the planets are all aligned this weekend. It’s not unusual to think that a team with such a piss-poor record is there for the taking, especially if it’s indoors. But that’s not something we can take for granted, is it? After all, Notts County hadn’t won at home in 2016 before we rocked up.

The form table for the last six league matches points out the obvious fact that Newport are propping up the division with only one point in the last month. It also shows that, away from home, the Exiles have a decent enough defensive record that means the lack of goals – failing to score in half on the road – hasn’t done that much damage. Boro’ have waited a long four fixtures for a victory at the Lamex; our scoring capabilities questionable at best.

Our previous with the Exiles is the veritable mixed bag – a defeat and a draw at theirs, a win at ours. Now, we’re not getting drawn on how this one will end up, but history teaches us that at least one side comes away having bagged a couple. Boro’ to triumph 2-1 at 19/2, Newport to do that instead at 21/2 or the four goals equally shared at 16s are odds that aren’t, with that last fact in mind, to be sniffed at, if you ask us. Which, of course, you didn’t.

And what about 11/5 on Aaron O’Connor to score against his former employers?

Now, can we suggest that 4-5-1 doesn’t even make the list of ideas this weekend and that we put two men up front – defences don’t like it up ’em, y’know. It’s not as if we have much lose as Newport Count roll into town, is it? Unless you count the game itself, and sure we’ve lost 20 out of 41 already – what harm adding another one to the list? Who knows – you might just miss asking “How did York do? Did Dagenham win?” when we no longer have to.
