 Welcome to the section of BoroGuide dedicated to the history of senior football in Stevenage before the current Boro' incarnation was born in 1976. It is generally accepted that Boro' is the third attempt at establishing senior football in the town, following on from the former Stevenage Athletic and Stevenage Town football clubs that have graced pitches in years past.
The demise of Stevenage Athletic after just eight years in existence was particularly hard to bear on those individuals who had worked hard to form the club in the wake of Stevenage Town's dissolution in 1968. Town, which had also toyed with omitting the suffix between 1956 and 1960, can be traced back to the turn of the 20th century. We can only attempt to find out as much as we can to ensure records are kept factually correct, but in some instances we may have fallen ever-so-slightly short. After all, we're sure you can appreciate that we haven't been there for every season that's gone by. And our knowledge will be dependent on available avenues of research that naturally dwindle the further in time you go back. For that reason, if there is any information that is missing, or any gaping holes you may be able to plug, please do tell us. We welcome all contributions - even the tiniest gem of info!
